For the past 6 months UK midwife, Helen Chai Lowenstein has been on a secondment from the NHS (National Health Service) to do midwifery training in Liberia. The 6 month programme has been funded by a local Liberian company called, Exxon, and has proved to be a huge success. We are immensely grateful to our partners and volunteers for facilitating the midwifery training in 6 counties, training 250 midwives! The 6 counties are; Montserrado, Gbarpulu, Grand Cape mount, Bomi, Grand Bassa and Margibi county. The outreach of the training has not only included highly populated areas, but also more rural hard to reach areas, which was essential to target due to scarcity of health centres and use of untrained traditional birth attendants.
Even though the 6 month intensive training period is coming to an end we will still continue training midwives in Liberia and we seek to renew our partnership with Exxon to keep up the high momentum.
Here are some photos from Liberia.
